DIOR AND DANIEL ARSHAM

For his Summer 2020 fashion show, Kim Jones, the Artistic Director of Dior men's collections, invited Daniel Arsham to create scenography featuring fascinating monolithic sculptures spelling out the word "D.I.O.R". A true “archaeologist of the future”, the New York-based American artist has built his work at the intersection of disciplines, initiating captivating dialogues between architecture and design, history and contemporary art.?

For this unprecedented collaboration, the artist created exclusive works that celebrate and reinvent the House's heritage. Numbered pieces reminiscent of his Future Relics series pay tribute to Christian Dior’s first vocation as a gallerist and art collector. In this spirit, the founding couturier's possessions appear to have been projected into an imaginary future and transformed into precious relics, partially eroded and incrusted with quartz crystals like reflections of a distant eternity. Precious relics indeed transformed into contemporary works. Among them is his publication “Je suis couturier”, published in 1951, which is now a book with a subtly eroded finish studded with crystals. Surprising miniatures replicate the letters "D.I.O.R" that punctuated the Summer 2020 men’s fashion show, echoing a passionate exchange between the Artistic Director and artist.?

As a continuation of this neo-futurist experience, conceptual boxes recalling the old-fashioned wooden crates used for special deliveries were created to preserve these original works. Blurring spatial and temporal boundaries, an hourglass in the same color of the show’s décor and even a pair of immaculate white gloves serve as the ultimate metaphors for this collaboration, and carry the promise of a singular odyssey. An accompanying certificate authenticates the artwork produced by Daniel Arsham in collaboration with Dior. Each limited-edition piece has been handcrafted at the artist’s studio.?
